Tip 9: Help families set up daily schedules for remote learning

How can we, as educators, best support families as they navigate remote learning (and for many parents — remote working)? For one, do what we are doing for you now — provide resources and examples. Especially in regards to helping implement a daily schedule.

If families are able to get their students on a schedule, that’s more than half the battle won. It’ll provide structure to give them the momentum to continue with their schoolwork and make remote learning sustainable.

Geneva County Schools shared a fun, visual schedule for a daily routine for families. It’s helpful even for families who have kids whose schools aren’t currently undergoing remote learning.

Northshore School District provided a weekly sample schedule for parents to help support implementing a routine learning schedule at home. They also have a web page that provides a comprehensive, organized list of activities to fill a daily schedule, compartmentalized by grade level.

Connections Academy has a great article with sample daily schedules for virtual school families that you can share with your school community (via whichever school communication platform you use and/or social media) as parents and students make the rapid shift to working and learning at home.

Also, ADDitude Magazine shared a sample schedule and resources for ADHD students navigating remote learning. It has a manageable number of options for each activity, and is a great resource for anyone looking to build a remote learning schedule.

If you have the capacity, it might be a good idea to create a video for your students. Cold Spring School shared a wonderful video of their student council president (and the school’s principal) sharing tips for keeping a schedule in place as they start remote learning. Not only is this a fun video, but it’s a great for students to hear tips like “brush your teeth” and “stay organized” from a peer.
