Tip 30: Deepen connections and create lasting memories with video projects

Sheltering at home doesn’t have to lead to fewer human connections. Having school events cancelled doesn’t necessarily mean that there aren’t amazing opportunities to create memories and celebrate together. Video can be a powerful means of creating memorable moments for teachers, students, parents and even the wider community.

One of the most inspiring examples we’ve seen so far came from the parents and students of Mrs. Pavone’s kindergarten class at Canandaigua Primary-Elementary School in New York.

When their Wizard of Oz play was cancelled due to COVID-19, parents videotaped their children in costume singing at home, which was complied (by an unknown creative individual) into a video for Mrs Pavone. Here is the wonderful recording of the video and her reaction to it:

The video also sparked dozens and dozens of comments on Facebook from parents and friends, saying how much they loved and appreciated her, and sharing how much of a positive impact she had on their children.

We predict this video will be treasured for a very long time not only by Mrs. Pavone, but also by the parents, students, school, Canandaigua community and beyond. It has created human connection at a distance. It contributes to positivity in a time of high uncertainty and stress for so many of us.

With Teacher Appreciation Week just around the corner, it’s a great time to create a video project for your class or school to bring people together and make a new kind of memory.

If you do make something, please let us know, so we can showcase you and your school, too!
